Columbia, circa 2019

Made by the Wounaan who are native to the Choco region, an area on the pacific coast of Colombia, defined by the richness of its landscape and biodiversity as well as it’s distinct Afro-Colombian heritage. The entire production of the baskets is carried out by hand, from harvesting the Werregue palm, to drying, dyeing and nally weaving these extraordinary pieces. From practical beginnings ~ baskets woven tightly enough to carry water and heavy harvests, to the development and innovation of the complex and intricate designs they now create.

The Wounaan baskets display true craftmanship, and are now recognised as amongst the most complex and intricate basket techniques in the world. Each basket is a piece of art, an entirely unique design of the individual artisan and a symbol of the rich and diverse nature of the Choco Region, and of the Wounaan culture.
